GIHOA and USA Hockey Officiating Seminars 2018-19

The Georgia Ice Hockey Officials Association and USA Hockey would like to welcome you to the 2018 - 2019 Hockey Season. The local staff is busy organizing and preparing to present a great seminar season for our local officials. Whether you are an experienced official, a first timer or a parent or coach who would like to expand your hockey knowledge, one of these seminars is the place to be. Pick the appropriate level seminar, pick your date, mark your calendar and follow the seminar registration procedures found below. Space is limited so register early. If these listed seminars do not fit your schedule, you can always search for another seminar throughout the Southeast at the Southeastern District web site Southeastern District web site. Registration for the new season and for seminars begins on August 1, 2018. If you have any questions about registering or seminars please contact Ryan Bray at Bray@gihoa.net

Important Information for the 2018 – 2019 Season

Changes that were implemented last year will continue this season.  Registration for the new season opens up on August 1. Information on these changes is located both at the Southeastern District Officials web site and the USA Hockey web site.
The following is very important and includes a change in the registration process for USA Hockey membership and attending a Seminar.  Registration for the 2018/2019 season opens up on Monday, August 1st.  New starting with the upcoming season, when registration opens on August 1, 2018, you MUST register with USA Hockey (which includes paying) BEFORE you will be allowed to register for a seminar.  This means any Official that wants to attend our first seminar on August 5th, will have only 4 days to register with USA Hockey and then register for that Seminar. You will no longer be allowed to wait until after the Seminar to register with USA Hockey.
Two new requirements for becoming a USA Hockey Official which started two seasons ago. USA Hockey is adding an online education requirement to the registration process and SafeSport training is now required for Officials over the age of 18. Just as with background screening, you will be required to complete SafeSport training every two years. Here's what you need to know about the new process:
All levels will be required to complete some computer-based (online) training course in order to complete the registration process. You will not receive your 2018-2019 registration card and sweater crest until you complete your online training. When you register with USA Hockey (registration opens Aug. 1) you will be able to access the new online training site. Training consists of a series of modules approximately 3-8 minutes in length (some upper level topics are longer). The modules contain a narrated presentation accompanied by video clips that illustrate the material in the module topic. The lessons are followed by a short quiz to check comprehension. You must receive a passing grade on the quiz in order to receive module credit. Online training requirements vary by level. There are some modules that should be completed before you attend a seminar. For that reason, we recommend the following procedure for registering or renewing your registration:

  1. This step must be completed prior to completing Seminar Registration, Open Book Exams, and Online Education.  Go to the USA Hockey Registration page and register or renew your registration. USA Hockey will open the registration site for the 2018-2019 season on Aug. 1.
  2. Log on to the USA Hockey Seminar Catalog and reserve your seat at a seminar. Once you have registered, pick a seminar at the same level as your registration.
  3. Attend the seminar.
  4. Log on to USA Hockey to complete your online training and open book rule exam.

Those over the age of 18 should ensure their background screening is up to date and should complete SafeSport training if they have not already done so. If you have not completed SafeSport or must renew your background screening, you should wait until after Aug. 1 to submit your background screening request and take the SafeSport training. Aug. 1 is the cutoff date and if you complete either SafeSport or your background screening prior to Aug 1, that credit will be applied to the 2018-2019 season. If you wait until after Aug. 1, both SafeSport and your screening will be good for the 2018-2019 and 2020-2021 seasons. Visit the following sites for information on Background Screening and SafeSport training. Southeast District web site and USA Hockey SafeSport web site.
The USA Hockey registration system will be tracking completion of the online seminar training curriculum and SafeSport training, as well as open book exam, closed book exam (Levels 2-4), skating test (Level 4) and seminar attendance. You will not receive your card and crest until all registration criteria have been fulfilled. You will be able to log in to your Referee Profile on USA Hockey to track your progress and review your exam scores. Since the registration system is being used to track progress, it is strongly recommended that you use the seminar reservation system to reserve a seat at a seminar instead of just showing up as a walk-in.
